A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Synopsis:
The Norwegian TV series "Annerledes" (2022), airing on TV2, takes viewers on an emotional journey through the lives of individuals who, much like the host Emma Ellingsen, have had to navigate their unique challenges and fight for acceptance in a world that often demands conformity. Through a series of personal stories, the show highlights how people from various walks of life have struggled with their identities, facing adversity, rejection, and internal battles while striving to carve out a space for themselves in society. With Emma as the empathetic guide, "Annerledes" paints a vivid picture of resilience, courage, and the power of self-acceptance.

Emma Ellingsen, born in 2001, is a prominent Norwegian model and YouTuber who has become a beacon of inspiration for many. Emma's journey of self-acceptance has been deeply intertwined with her transition as a transgender woman, a path she began walking at a young age. Having come out to her family and friends around the age of nine, Emma became a trailblazer in a society that was only beginning to acknowledge the complexities of gender identity. Her story was featured in the Norwegian documentary "Born in the Wrong Body", which focused on transgender children, and she has since become a significant voice in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and representation. Through "Annerledes", Emma uses her platform to connect with people who, like her, have had to overcome personal challenges related to their identities. What sets Emma apart as the host of the show is her ability to relate deeply to the individuals she meets, drawing on her own experiences of being misunderstood, marginalized, and searching for acceptance. Her open, approachable, and compassionate style makes her the perfect presenter for a show that tackles sensitive and deeply personal topics.

Each episode of "Annerledes" introduces a new individual with a unique story, offering viewers a glimpse into the struggles they have faced and the strength they have found along the way. Emma takes a hands-on approach to these stories, spending time with the individuals, listening to their experiences, and sharing in their emotional journeys. In one of the most poignant episodes, Emma travels to Bergen to meet Myra, a rapper who has faced significant challenges in her life, particularly during her childhood. Myra’s story is one of insecurity and lack of belonging, having grown up in a foster care system where she struggled with finding her identity. The episode takes Emma and Myra back to one of the orphanages where Myra spent part of her childhood, leading to an emotional reunion with her foster family. Through Myra’s story, viewers see the impact of early childhood experiences on self-worth and the ongoing search for belonging, as well as the power of music and personal expression in healing and growth.

Another powerful episode features Birgit Skarstein, a Paralympic athlete, who shares her journey of becoming an elite athlete after being paralyzed. Emma joins Birgit on a skiing adventure, gaining an honest and firsthand insight into the challenges of living with a disability. Birgit's determination and positive attitude are a testament to human strength, and her story is a powerful message about overcoming physical limitations and refusing to be defined by one's circumstances. Emma’s admiration for Birgit’s resilience is palpable, and her interaction with Birgit serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. In another emotional episode, Emma meets rapper Karsten Marcussen, known as "Big Daddy Karsten," who shares his story of waiting until the age of 28 to come out as gay. Growing up in a small, conservative town, Karsten faced immense pressure to conform to societal expectations and struggled with his sexual identity. His openness about the difficulties of being closeted for so long and the toll it took on his mental health resonates deeply with viewers, especially those who have faced similar struggles with acceptance. Through Karsten’s story, the series highlights the importance of embracing one’s true self, no matter how long it may take to get there.

Adrian Sellevoll, a young man with ADHD, takes center stage in another episode, offering Emma and viewers an honest look into the challenges of living with a neurological condition. Adrian participates in a daring sport, "dødsing" (death diving), as a way to express himself and find focus. He candidly discusses the difficulties he faced growing up, from dealing with a lack of understanding about ADHD to facing the stigma associated with the condition. Adrian’s openness about his mental health struggles and the importance of finding coping mechanisms is a crucial aspect of the episode, raising awareness about neurodiversity and the power of self-expression. Emma's journey also takes her to Kristiansand, where she meets Roya Sori, a refugee from Iran. Roya shares her harrowing story of escaping the war in her home country and her difficult journey to find a new life in Norway. The episode dives deep into Roya’s experience of being an immigrant in a foreign land, dealing with both the trauma of war and the challenges of integrating into a new culture. Her account of enduring years of bullying in school and a suicide attempt that ultimately changed the course of her life is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Roya’s resilience and determination to help others are truly inspiring.

Carina Carlsen, a body-positive advocate, opens up to Emma about her years of struggle with an eating disorder. She talks about the stigma she has faced due to her body size and the challenges of living in a society obsessed with thinness. Carina’s journey to self-acceptance and her involvement in burlesque dancing has been a key part of her healing process. Through her participation in burlesque, Carina has found empowerment and body confidence. Emma’s experience in joining Carina’s burlesque performance for the first time is a humorous and enlightening moment, showcasing the power of embracing one's body and rejecting societal expectations. In Karasjok, Emma meets Vegard Bjørsmo, a Sami artist and actor. Vegard’s story is one of cultural pride, but also the challenges of standing out in a small town where being different can be difficult. As a member of the Sami community, Vegard faces both the beauty of his heritage and the social difficulties that come with being a visible minority in his hometown. The episode highlights the complexities of identity, particularly in a small, close-knit community, and the difficulties of reconciling one’s cultural heritage with the pressures of fitting in.

Throughout "Annerledes", Emma's personal journey is interwoven with the stories of the individuals she meets. Emma reflects on her own experiences of being different, of growing up without visible role models who shared her experience as a transgender person. In contrast to her openness, many of the people she meets on the show have not had the same freedom to express themselves. Through her interactions with each guest, Emma fosters understanding, compassion, and a sense of shared humanity, making "Annerledes" not just a show about personal stories but also about the universal journey toward acceptance. "Annerledes" is more than just a television series; it is a celebration of diversity, resilience, and the human spirit. Through Emma Ellingsen’s empathetic storytelling and her connection with the diverse individuals she meets, the series explores themes of identity, self-acceptance, and the ongoing struggle to be seen and valued for who we truly are. It serves as a powerful reminder that we all have unique stories to tell, and that despite our differences, we are united in our shared experiences of love, pain, and the desire to belong.
