A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Je Suis Trans

Director: Mathieu Baer
Release Year: 2016

Synopsis:
In 2016, director Mathieu Baer brought to the screen an important and groundbreaking French-Canadian documentary series, "Je suis trans", which aired on MOI&cie. This poignant, raw, and intimate 10-episode series focuses on the lives of five transgender individuals from Quebec at different stages of their gender transition.

By offering a humanized and unfiltered perspective on transgender experiences, "Je suis trans" not only educates but also challenges societal norms and misconceptions about gender identity. Through its honest portrayal, the series sheds light on the complex, often difficult realities faced by transgender people, while also celebrating their triumphs, milestones, and resilience. It is a series that does more than simply document the process of transition—it opens up conversations about identity, family, love, sexuality, medical challenges, and the journey towards self-affirmation.

Unlike many portrayals of transgender lives, "Je suis trans" avoids sensationalism and instead presents the experiences of its protagonists in a deeply authentic and compassionate way. Directed by Baer, the series follows five individuals—ranging in age from 14 to 37—at different points in their transitions. Each of these characters has a unique story, influenced by personal, medical, familial, and societal factors. Baer’s approach is to let these individuals speak for themselves, ensuring that their stories are told with respect and sensitivity. The series unfolds over 10 30-minute episodes, with the first two episodes presented at the press screening in January 2016. "Je suis trans" explores a wide range of themes, including the psychological and emotional journey of transitioning, the medical aspects such as hormone therapy and surgeries, and the often difficult process of navigating societal perceptions. The series is a valuable educational tool that demystifies transgender experiences, while also offering the kind of representation that is often missing from mainstream media.

The documentary introduces viewers to five captivating individuals whose journeys are as unique as their personalities. Each character's transformation is not merely a medical or physical process, but a profound emotional and psychological journey that requires navigating multiple dimensions of identity.
  • Khloé - At just 14 years old, Khloé is one of the youngest subjects featured in the series. She began her gender transition two years earlier and, by the time we meet her, has been fully embracing her identity as a girl at school since the start of the current school year. Khloé is undergoing hormone blockers to halt male puberty, and her story is one of hope, as her transition has been met with support both at home and at school. Her journey offers viewers a glimpse into the life of a young transgender person coming of age in a world that is slowly becoming more accepting.
  • Jesyca - Jesyca's story is one of profound personal transformation. After a challenging period of self-discovery, she was encouraged by her mother to explore her gender identity. Jesyca’s journey spans three years, during which she has undergone significant medical procedures, including rhinoplasty and vaginoplasty. The documentary provides an intimate view of her struggles and successes, including her reflections on her sexual experiences post-transition, highlighting the emotional and physical changes she’s undergone.
  • Alexis - Alexis’ story is one of survival and defiance. A transgender man who transitioned later in life, Alexis was driven to change his gender not just for self-affirmation, but because it had become a matter of life and death. Now a father with a young daughter, Alexis acts as a mentor to many other young transgender people, helping them navigate their own journeys. His story also includes the financial and medical challenges of transitioning, such as his decision to undergo phalloplasty, which cost him $45,000 before it became covered by Quebec’s healthcare system.
  • Ariane/Zacharry -Ariane’s transformation into Zacharry began mentally at 17, but it wasn’t until his early 20s that he began the physical transition. Throughout his journey, Zacharry and his family sought guidance from Alexis, whose experience helped them feel supported as they navigated the medical and social aspects of gender transition. Zacharry’s story is about the emotional weight of becoming who you truly are, and his transformation from Ariane to Zacharry reflects not just a change in name but a deeper sense of personal liberation.
  • Danielle - At 37, Danielle is an activist with over 15 years of experience in advocating for the rights of transgender people. Her journey, which started in a rural, conservative part of Quebec, has been marked by both rejection—particularly from her siblings—and acceptance, particularly from her parents. Danielle’s activism plays a key role in the series, and her work to improve services and increase understanding of transgender issues in Quebec provides a broader social context for the individual stories of the other protagonists.
The series goes beyond the medical aspects of transitioning and takes a deep dive into the psychological and emotional experiences of its protagonists. By addressing topics that are often considered taboo—such as the costs of medical procedures, the emotional rollercoaster of transition, and the impact of gender identity on relationships and sexuality—"Je suis trans" seeks to normalize the transgender experience and reduce the stigma associated with it. One of the most powerful aspects of the series is its commitment to education. As Baer explains, “I went everywhere, to all the questions. There were no more taboos at the end. They wanted to share their lives with us.” This transparency allows viewers to understand the reality of being transgender—from hormone therapy and surgeries like mastectomy, phalloplasty, and vaginoplasty, to the more personal moments of intimacy, dating, and family life. It is a rare opportunity for audiences to witness the full spectrum of a transgender person’s journey and to learn about the challenges and triumphs that accompany such a profound transformation.

Family dynamics are central to many of the stories portrayed in "Je suis trans". The series highlights how family members react to the transitions of their loved ones—ranging from acceptance to confusion, fear, and eventually understanding. In one memorable moment, Jesyca’s mother talks candidly about the emotional process of coming to terms with her child’s transition, providing an honest perspective on the challenges faced by parents of transgender children. The series also explores societal acceptance and the impact of transitioning on relationships, professional life, and social interactions. For example, Alexis’ role as a mentor to young transgender people highlights the power of community support and the importance of finding mentors who have walked the same path. In addition, the documentary delves into the professional lives of the protagonists, addressing issues of discrimination, acceptance, and success in the workplace.

One of the most inspiring aspects of "Je suis trans" is its emphasis on visibility and representation. The documentary goes beyond the individual stories to address the broader social issues facing the transgender community. Through the characters’ experiences—whether it’s working at a supportive workplace like MAC Cosmetics, participating in a fashion show at Montreal’s Festival Mode et Design, or advocating for trans rights—"Je suis trans" shows the diverse ways in which transgender people are carving out space for themselves in society. Danielle’s activism is particularly important in this context. Her work as a trans advocate speaks to the necessity of continuing to fight for equal rights, better healthcare, and societal acceptance for transgender people. By making these issues visible in mainstream media, the documentary helps to foster a greater understanding of the challenges that transgender individuals face, while also celebrating their accomplishments.

"Je suis trans" is more than just a documentary; it is a cultural milestone that provides a nuanced, multifaceted perspective on the transgender experience. By following the lives of five individuals through their transitions, it gives viewers an intimate, raw, and often emotional look at the realities of being transgender. At its core, the series is about human connection, empathy, and the fight for acceptance and understanding in a world that is still learning to embrace diversity in all its forms. In showcasing the complexity, beauty, and challenges of transitioning, "Je suis trans" plays a critical role in shifting societal perceptions and breaking down harmful stereotypes about transgender people. By humanizing the transgender experience, the series helps to normalize it, promoting greater inclusivity, equality, and respect for all individuals, regardless of gender identity. It is a powerful tool for education, advocacy, and change—one that brings us closer to a society where everyone is free to live their truth.
