A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story

Director: Sandrine Orabona & Mark Herzog
Release Year: 2014

Synopsis:
"Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story" (2014) by Sandrine Orabona and Mark Herzog is a deeply moving documentary that chronicles the life of Kristin Beck, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, who served for over two decades in one of the most elite and secretive branches of the U.S. military. The film traces her journey from a decorated combat veteran known as Christopher Beck to her coming out as a transgender woman, offering a profound exploration of identity, courage, and the ongoing fight for equality.

Kristin Beck’s story is a testament to the complex intersection between personal identity and military duty. For over twenty years, Beck was a highly respected member of the Navy SEALs, serving with distinction in numerous high-risk operations, including 13 deployments and seven combat tours. As part of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as SEAL Team 6, Beck played a critical role in counterterrorism missions and earned multiple military awards for her service. Yet despite her impressive career and devotion to her country, Kristin lived a secret life, hiding her true self from the military and the world, knowing that coming out as a transgender woman would cost her everything she had worked so hard for.

The documentary begins by examining Kristin’s extensive career in the Navy SEALs, providing exclusive footage of her training and combat experiences. The film highlights the rigorous demands of the SEALs and the unyielding nature of military service. But it also delves into the personal toll that service exacted on her, particularly in relation to her gender identity. For much of her life, Kristin struggled with the internal conflict of being born male but feeling like a woman inside. However, due to the pervasive stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ issues, especially in the military, she felt compelled to suppress her true identity for fear of being ostracized, discharged, or worse.

After retiring from the SEALs in 2011, Kristin continued her high-level clearance work with the Pentagon and the U.S. government. But despite her professional success, she could no longer deny the disconnect between her external self and her internal truth. In 2013, a year and a half after her retirement, Kristin made the life-changing decision to publicly come out as transgender, first on LinkedIn and later in an emotional interview on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360. This moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, one where she could finally live authentically, though not without significant personal and professional risks.

The film not only features Kristin's own reflections on her transition but also includes interviews with her family, friends, and former colleagues, who offer their perspectives on her service and the aftermath of her coming out. For many, Kristin’s revelation was a shock. As a former Navy SEAL, she had been a symbol of traditional masculinity, strength, and resilience—qualities that the public had come to associate with her identity as Christopher Beck. Yet the people closest to her, including her mother and siblings, expressed a mix of surprise, confusion, and eventually support, recognizing her as the same person they had always known, just now able to live as her true self.

The documentary takes a candid look at the challenges that come with living as a transgender person, particularly for those who have had to hide their identity for much of their lives. Kristin's experience speaks to the broader struggles of the transgender community, whose members continue to face discrimination, violence, and a lack of understanding. One of the most poignant moments in the film is when Kristin acknowledges the emotional and psychological toll of her long years of suppression. She reveals how she had to compartmentalize her identity while serving in the military, creating an emotional armor to protect herself from the societal pressures and potential threats to her career. But as the film shows, the armor could only protect her for so long.

While many people responded to Kristin’s transition with kindness and acceptance, others expressed bigotry and confusion, particularly in the online realm. Kristin herself warns against reading the comments section of news stories, acknowledging that the vitriol and hate in these spaces can be overwhelming. Yet she also finds solace in the support she receives from those who understand her journey. Throughout the documentary, Kristin discusses her continued advocacy for transgender rights, especially in the military, where transgender people have historically been banned from openly serving. Her public coming out sparked important conversations about the policies surrounding transgender service members and whether they could openly serve without fear of discharge or discrimination. At the time the documentary was made, the U.S. Department of Defense had announced it would review its policies, a step that Kristin sees as progress, albeit one that came far too late for many who have suffered under such restrictions.

In the film, Kristin is also portrayed as an advocate for equality and human rights. She discusses her involvement in various campaigns and speaks passionately about the need for transgender visibility in all areas of life, including politics, where she hopes to one day run for office. Kristin’s transition is not just a personal milestone, but also a political statement, one that reflects her commitment to the broader struggle for transgender rights. She stresses the importance of standing up for those who are marginalized and voiceless, using her platform to push for societal change.

As the film continues, Kristin shares her personal reflections on the broader significance of her transition. She speaks candidly about the challenges she faces as a transgender woman in America, where transphobia and violence against transgender people—particularly transgender women of color—remain rampant. She observes that the transgender community, despite its progress, is still the most disenfranchised group in the United States. This stark reality is underscored by the tragic fact that transgender individuals are murdered at a rate of approximately one per week in the U.S., a statistic that Kristin poignantly highlights as part of her ongoing advocacy work.

At the heart of the film is Kristin’s transformation into her authentic self. It is a story of bravery, resilience, and the pursuit of happiness—values that resonate deeply with the ideals she served to protect during her time in the military. Her journey from Navy SEAL to transgender activist is a reminder of the power of self-determination and the importance of living truthfully, no matter the personal cost. The documentary also features Kristin’s work beyond her advocacy, including her involvement in the 296 Project, an art therapy initiative for veterans dealing with PTSD. This project allows soldiers to express their emotional struggles through art, offering a therapeutic outlet for those who have been affected by the invisible wounds of war. Kristin’s involvement in the project demonstrates her continued commitment to service, as she works to help her fellow veterans find healing and peace.

In addition to her activism and advocacy, Kristin also explores her new passion for fashion, having participated in a high-fashion photo shoot for Flaunt magazine. Her foray into the world of fashion is an exciting new chapter for her, one that reflects the freedom she now feels in expressing herself fully. As the film concludes, Kristin reflects on the advice she would give to transgender individuals who are struggling with their own gender dysphoria. Her message is one of love and encouragement: "We are all beautiful, we are all worthy, and we all deserve dignity and respect." She urges her transgender brothers and sisters to keep going, to endure the difficult moments, because better times are ahead.

"Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story" is not just a story about one woman’s journey to self-acceptance. It is a powerful and emotional exploration of the struggles faced by transgender individuals, the impact of military service on personal identity, and the ongoing fight for equal rights. Through Kristin Beck’s courage, the film highlights the importance of authenticity and the need for society to recognize and embrace the diverse experiences of all people. Her story is a beacon of hope for those who continue to face adversity, and a reminder that the fight for human dignity and equality is far from over.
