A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Older Transgender Woman Meets Young Transgender Woman

Producer: LADbibleTV
Release Year: 2022

Synopsis:
In 2022, LADbibleTV aired a poignant and enlightening special episode of "The Gap" to celebrate Pride Month, bringing together two incredible transgender women: Carolyn Mercer, a 75-year-old former headteacher, and Cambell Kenneford, a 27-year-old UK-based influencer. The interview, which touched on themes of identity, struggle, transformation, and the progress of the transgender community over the decades, offered a unique cross-generational perspective on the transgender experience. This conversation explored the vast changes that have taken place in society and healthcare regarding transgender rights, while also delving into the deeply personal journeys of these two women.

Through the lens of Carolyn's 55-year struggle and Cambell's more recent transition, the episode highlighted both the immense challenges transgender people continue to face and the growing visibility and acceptance of the community. Carolyn Mercer’s story is one of incredible resilience. At 75 years old, Carolyn has lived through an era where being transgender was not just taboo, but often seen as a psychological condition that needed to be "cured." In a harrowing recount of her youth, Carolyn described undergoing cruel electro-aversion therapy, an attempt to force her to reject her true gender identity. In her late teens, she was subjected to electric shock treatments intended to suppress her feelings of gender dysphoria. She was taken into a darkened room, strapped to a chair and given electric shock treatment. The strategy was to make her associate what she wanted to be with pain. It took her 40 years to stop shivering at the thought of that treatment. This was just one of the many traumatic experiences Carolyn endured in her early life. Growing up in an environment where her identity was not only misunderstood but actively persecuted, Carolyn tried everything she could to “fit in.”

As a young person, she sought answers from religion, medicine, and society to understand why she felt so different from others. She even visited her doctor at age 17 and begged for a cure to her feelings of gender dysphoria, only to be met with indifference. Despite the severe psychological and emotional toll of these experiences, Carolyn’s story is ultimately one of survival. After a highly successful career as a headteacher, Carolyn transitioned in the early 2000s, decades after she first recognized her true identity. However, even as an accomplished educator and respected leader, she faced immense challenges. In 1994, while transitioning, Carolyn was outed as transgender, and her personal life became the subject of intense media scrutiny. A photo of her holding a courgette while preparing a meal went viral, marking her as a public figure in a time when transgender stories were rarely discussed in the media. Although she faced backlash and professional suspension, Carolyn continued to push forwardm being  determined, stubborn, and resolute, which does not come to everybody. Carolyn’s journey reflects the harsh realities of a time when there was little understanding or support for transgender individuals. Yet, her strength and determination to live as her true self, despite the immense social and personal cost, have made her a trailblazer for future generations.

Cambell Kenneford’s experience, by contrast, illustrates the positive changes that have occurred in the transgender community over the past few decades. A 27-year-old influencer and activist, Cambell grew up in a much more accepting environment, where transgender people were starting to gain visibility in mainstream media and conversations around gender identity were becoming more open and inclusive. Cambell’s journey of self-discovery began early. She recalls knowing from a very young age that her soul did not align with the gender she was assigned at birth. When she was old enough to speak, she made her thoughts very clear to everyone around her that she wanted to be a girl. Whether that was putting towels on her head and pretending she was Ariel from "The Little Mermaid", or being obsessed with the Spice Girls, Barbies, and anything typically ‘girly,’ she always knew her soul didn’t match the shell she was born into. However, Cambell’s experiences growing up were not without challenges. She felt deeply out of place among her peers, especially when it came to school activities that reinforced traditional gender roles, such as "The Love Tunnel" game at school discos.

She also struggled with society’s expectations around sexuality. “I always saw myself as a prom queen in disguise,” she said in her Glamour article, reflecting on how she felt excluded from typical adolescent experiences due to her gender identity. When Cambell began hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at 16, her life began to shift significantly. Although she initially saw herself only attracted to men, her understanding of her own identity and relationships evolved as she grew more comfortable in her body. Today, Cambell is in a long-term relationship with a cisgender woman and has found peace in embracing both her femininity and the traditionally "masculine" aspects of her personality. In the Glamour article, she wrote: "Femininity doesn’t mean ‘small’ or ‘dainty,’ femininity is defined by how you individually wish to perceive it," Cambell shared, reflecting on her personal growth and the broader societal shifts around gender norms. "I’ve just cut my hair into a bob; 2019 Cambell would be crying into her Rapunzel length extensions if she could see!" Her transition not only allowed her to embrace her identity, but it also led her to advocate for the transgender community. Cambell now uses her platform to educate others, create safe spaces for her followers, and promote awareness about LGBTQ+ issues. Her journey demonstrates the profound changes in social acceptance, healthcare, and representation that have made life easier for younger transgender individuals like herself.

The interview between Carolyn and Cambell highlighted the stark differences in their experiences as transgender women, reflecting the broader societal shifts that have occurred over the years. Carolyn’s story, marked by hardship, societal rejection, and medical abuse, underscores the long road of struggle that many older transgender individuals had to endure. In contrast, Cambell’s experience highlights a time when transgender people are beginning to find more support, acceptance, and opportunities for self-expression. Yet, despite these differences, both women share a common theme: resilience. Carolyn’s determination to survive and thrive despite the cruelty she faced, and Cambell’s confidence in embracing her identity in a world that is more inclusive, both serve as powerful reminders of the strength that lies within the transgender community. As Cambell reflects for Glamour, “I spent so long seeking validation for my womanhood, but I didn’t realise the woman was always inside me, ever since the day I was born.” The conversation between Carolyn and Cambell is not just a celebration of Pride Month, but a testament to the strength, evolution, and diversity of the transgender experience. By bringing together two women from different generations, LADbibleTV was able to shine a light on the progress that has been made—and the work that still lies ahead—to ensure that all transgender individuals can live authentically and without fear.
