A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

Transsexual Stories

Director: Benjie Bateman
Release Year: 2015

Synopsis:
Released in 2015, "Transsexual Stories" is a poignant and intimate documentary directed by Benjie Bateman, which explores the lives of five trans women in Scotland, following them through various stages of their gender transition. Over the course of one year, the film offers a candid and deeply human perspective on the struggles, triumphs, and daily experiences of these women, from hormone therapy to full gender-affirming surgery. The documentary takes viewers on an emotional journey through the lives of Anne, Gladys, Carla, Bee, and Jan—each woman at a different point in her transition, navigating personal, social, and medical challenges in an often unforgiving world.

Anne Stewart, a transgender bus driver from Perth, Scotland, is one of the central figures in the documentary. Having served as a soldier in the Black Watch Regiment, Anne transitioned from male to female in her 40s, a journey that was fraught with both external challenges and personal triumphs. One of the key obstacles she faced was the public nature of her transition. Coming out to her colleagues, passengers, and even her family was not easy, but Anne persevered. By the time of filming, she had already come out to her family and work colleagues, and she was living full-time as a woman in hopes of being approved for gender-affirming surgery. Anne reflects on how difficult the transition has been for her, even after years of service in the army, calling the process of gender transition the most challenging experience of her life.

In "Transsexual Stories", she shares the emotional toll of transitioning, stating that her past as a soldier does not compare to the sacrifices she had to make in order to live authentically as a woman. Anne’s story highlights a key fact in the transgender community: in order to be considered for surgery, trans women must live and work full-time as their gender for at least two years to prove to doctors and psychologists that they are committed to the transition. Anne’s bravery is matched by the support she received from her family and colleagues, who have been instrumental in her journey. While not all trans women are fortunate enough to have such backing, Anne’s story exemplifies how essential support systems are for the success of any transition. Her workplace, in particular, became a crucial pillar of acceptance, and she credits her colleagues’ open-mindedness with helping her through the process. For Anne, driving a bus as a trans woman was a dual challenge, not just navigating a demanding job but also breaking down the social prejudices that accompanied her gender identity. Through her persistence, Anne eventually gained the public’s understanding, and she hopes her participation in the documentary will help others facing similar struggles.

Bee Wallace, a 17-year-old from Scotland, offers a stark contrast to Anne’s journey. At just 14 years old, Bee began her transition from male to female, beginning hormone therapy and starting the long process of physical and emotional transformation. Bee’s youthful optimism and striking sense of style make her a unique presence in "Transsexual Stories". Her dream is to become a famous makeup artist, and her passion for fashion and beauty shines throughout the film. Hormone therapy, which is a lifelong commitment for trans women, can be both physically and emotionally taxing. Bee is only at the beginning of her transition, and her journey is complicated not only by the physical challenges of the therapy but also by the social pressures of living as a transgender person in a small town. While her family has been supportive, Bee has to navigate the skepticism of a community where acceptance is still a work in progress. Despite these challenges, Bee remains hopeful that her story will help bring more awareness to transgender issues and advocate for greater acceptance of trans individuals. Filming the documentary was initially a nerve-wracking experience for Bee, but with the encouragement of the crew, she eventually opened up and found the process to be an opportunity for personal growth. Bee’s courage to share her journey publicly is part of her larger goal of educating others about the reality of transgender life. She hopes the documentary will contribute to dismantling the stigma that often surrounds transgender people and show the world that they are simply people seeking to live fulfilling lives, free of prejudice.

Jan Irvine, a 62-year-old transgender woman from Midlothian, brings a wealth of life experience to the documentary. Jan came out as transgender at the age of 48, a pivotal moment in her life that led to the dissolution of her marriage and estrangement from her son and grandchildren. However, Jan does not view her transition with regret. Instead, she has made it her mission to educate others about transgender issues, hoping to make life easier for future generations. Through her journey, Jan has learned to embrace her identity and use her experiences to advocate for the transgender community. She recalls how, early on, many transgender women like herself attempted to hide their true identity by pursuing typically masculine careers, getting married, and having children. For Jan, the realization that she could no longer live in denial was liberating, even though it meant losing relationships and facing significant personal challenges. Throughout filming, Jan remained focused on her goal to raise awareness and help others understand the complexities of transgender identity. Jan’s involvement in "Transsexual Stories" was a way for her to share her mission of education with a wider audience. She had long been active in speaking to students at Edinburgh College about transgender issues, and the opportunity to speak at a comedy club was a dream come true for her. Despite her nerves, Jan delivered her message with humor and sincerity, using comedy as a tool to normalize the experiences of transgender people. Through the documentary, she hopes to show that transgender individuals are not defined by their struggles, but rather by their strength and resilience. She also emphasizes that although the world may not be perfect, every person—transgender or otherwise—deserves a chance at a fulfilling life.

Gladys Patterson, a 77-year-old retired antiques dealer, represents one of the most remarkable transitions in "Transsexual Stories". Having undergone gender-affirming surgery at the age of 69, Gladys’s story is one of late-life transformation and bravery. Her journey to self-acceptance spanned decades, and her decision to transition later in life reflects the challenges faced by older trans individuals, who may not have had the same social awareness or medical support available to younger generations. Gladys's experiences are a testament to the importance of visibility for older transgender individuals, who often feel marginalized or invisible in both the transgender and broader communities. Her decision to live her truth, even in her senior years, serves as an inspiration to those who may have delayed their own transitions out of fear or societal pressure. Gladys’s story, alongside those of the other women in "Transsexual Stories", helps to paint a fuller picture of what it means to be a transgender woman, regardless of age or background.

"Transsexual Stories" is not just a documentary; it is a powerful tool for advocacy and education. By giving viewers an intimate look into the lives of transgender women, the film encourages empathy, challenges stereotypes, and provides a platform for voices that are often silenced. The diverse experiences of Anne, Bee, Jan, Gladys, and Carla highlight the various paths that transgender people may take on their journeys to self-realization and acceptance. The documentary’s strength lies in its honesty, humor, and the deeply personal stories of the women it follows. As the transgender community continues to fight for equality, "Transsexual Stories" serves as a reminder that trans women, like anyone else, are simply individuals trying to live happy, fulfilling lives. Through shared experiences, support systems, and the courage to be visible, the documentary offers hope not just for trans women, but for all marginalized groups seeking acceptance and understanding.
