A random collection of films authored by or about my transgender, intersex sisters, and gender-nonconforming persons all over the world. I watched some of them, and I was inspired by some of them. I met some of the authors and heroines, some of them are my best friends, and I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some of them. If you know of any transgender documentary that I have not covered yet, please let me know.

My Fierce Aunt Bianca

Director: María José Maldonado and Latavia Alicia Young
Release Year: 2023

Synopsis:
In "My Fierce Aunt Bianca" (2023), co-director María José Maldonado takes us on a deeply personal and emotional journey to celebrate and correct the legacy of her late aunt, Bianca "Exotica" Maldonado. This documentary is not only an exploration of Bianca’s life but also a heartfelt tribute to the trans women and queer people who shaped María José's world, leaving a lasting impact on both personal and cultural levels. By revisiting Bianca’s colorful past through her own childhood memories and the stories of those closest to her, the film transforms a family history into a broader reflection on identity, love, and the struggle for acceptance in a world that often marginalizes trans lives.

The film opens with María José planning a birthday party for Bianca, a ritual that becomes both a celebration of life and a way of fulfilling a promise. Bianca passed away in 1996 from AIDS-related complications at the age of 30, just as she was beginning to make her mark in both the queer and mainstream cultural scenes. Although much of her life was lived on the margins, Bianca was anything but invisible. Known by her stage name "Exotica," she was a dominant force in the New York City nightlife scene of the '90s and appeared on national talk shows such as "The Jenny Jones Show" and "Phil Donahue", where her bold presence as a trans woman and sex worker defied mainstream norms. Through the lens of María José’s personal recollections and interviews with key people from Bianca’s life, we experience an intimate portrayal of the fierce woman who was both a star and a beloved family member. The documentary not only revisits Bianca’s vibrant New York City years but also reconsiders the familial love and sometimes difficult acceptance that came with being a trans woman in a family still learning what it means to be queer.

One of the most compelling aspects of "My Fierce Aunt Bianca" is how it brings together several different voices and perspectives, each contributing to a more holistic understanding of Bianca’s life. The film weaves together the memories of Bianca’s mother, Gloria Voelcker, her best friend Nana Nazario, and María José’s own childhood reflections. We also hear from Andromeda Rodriguez, Bianca’s niece, who reconnects with her through spiritual practice, providing a different lens through which to view her life and legacy. Together, these voices help fill in the gaps left by time and tragedy. The film’s narrative is rooted in María José’s desire to correct the way Bianca’s story is told—especially as a transgender woman who had to navigate both the rejection and acceptance of her family. In the 1990s, there was little understanding of trans identity within the family, and many still referred to Bianca by her birth name, Boris. The documentary subtly highlights this tension, showing how Bianca’s journey of self-discovery was paralleled by her family’s own education on what it meant to love and support a trans family member. The film brings us to the heart of the '90s New York City queer scene, a time when the Club Kids, drag queens, and trans women like Bianca ruled the nightlife. These moments are brought to life with nostalgia and reverence, offering a glimpse into the world Bianca thrived in—a world of fashion, clubbing, and self-expression where people like Bianca weren’t afraid to break boundaries.

At its core, "My Fierce Aunt Bianca" is a story about identity—both personal and collective—and the power of legacy. Bianca, despite her relatively short life, made an indelible mark on both her family and on the cultural fabric of '90s New York. María José recalls the times Bianca picked her up from school, where her aunt would lavish her with compliments that would build her self-confidence. One moment that stands out is when Bianca told María José that her red Converse sneakers were stylish, giving her the validation she needed as a shy young girl. These seemingly small gestures of love were part of a larger picture that also included Bianca’s role as a mentor and protector to other queer and trans people. Through Bianca’s friendships and alliances, "My Fierce Aunt Bianca" underscores the importance of chosen family and community in the queer world. Bianca’s fierce personality and desire to protect her loved ones are evident in the stories shared by her childhood friend, Nancy, who recounts how Bianca was known to take control of situations with an unshakable sense of authority and charm. Bianca’s aspirations, like starting her own house and making avant-garde films about her life as a dominatrix, never came to fruition due to her untimely death. However, the film makes it clear that Bianca’s legacy lives on—not just through archival footage or stories, but through the lives of those she touched.

The film builds towards a poignant conclusion at Bianca’s 57th birthday party, where María José and her family gather to celebrate both Bianca’s life and the enduring love that remains, even after death. This moment encapsulates the themes of love, loss, and the complicated nature of familial relationships. Despite the challenges and misunderstandings Bianca faced, she was undeniably a force to be reckoned with, a symbol of pride and defiance. The documentary doesn’t just show the beauty of Bianca’s life but also the complexities of her relationships, reminding us that trans lives, like all lives, are multifaceted. The documentary also explores spirituality as a way of connecting with the past, with María José seeking meaning and closure through her practices. This part of the film is deeply moving, offering a way for the family to bridge the gap between the living and the dead, and for María José to fulfill her promise to her aunt by keeping her memory alive in a powerful and public way.

"My Fierce Aunt Bianca" is a visually and emotionally rich documentary that transcends the personal and speaks to broader issues within the queer community. It’s a film about reclaiming stories that have been silenced, about celebrating trans lives that have too often been forgotten or overlooked. Bianca’s life and legacy are a testament to the resilience and beauty of trans women, and the documentary serves as both a celebration of her impact and a call to honor and remember those who paved the way for future generations. For María José, the film is not just a tribute to her aunt; it’s a declaration of love, pride, and the importance of remembering those who live on in our hearts. Bianca, once a glamorous and magnetic presence on the talk show circuit, now exists in the digital world—on YouTube, on album covers, in memories—and her influence continues to resonate. The film honors Bianca’s legacy, ensuring that the fierceness of her spirit, her defiance, and her love will continue to inspire, not just her family, but the world at large. Bianca may have left this world too soon, but "My Fierce Aunt Bianca" ensures that her story and her spirit will never fade away. Instead, her legacy burns brightly, lighting the way for future generations of queer, trans, and nonbinary people.
